The Search Engines

The search market is dominated by three main players, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. These search engines account for over 90.8% of the U.S. searches and nearly the same in Canada. This represents approximately 9.6 billion searches in any given month.

Search engines roam the internet everyday using spiders or bots to read and index websites. These bots are looking for very specific information composed of several elements. Sites are then ranked and assigned priority by the engines.

Each of the main search engines does this in a different way and a good website accommodates all three to achieve the best visibility.
